After retiring Sharon Davis was commissioned as a missionary with the Evangelical Covenant Church. In 2009 she went to Cameroon West Africa for two and a half years where her ministry focused on empowering women living in villages. After returning to the USA Sharon continued to return to Cameroon every six months. In 2017 the leadership of the ministry was fully turned over to the Cameroonian women. In March 2017 Oakdale Covenant Church, her home church, encouraged her to move to Mississippi to demonstrate to people, we do not have to leave the shores of the United States to serve as a missionary. In July 2024 Sharon returned home as the assistant director of ministries at Oakdale with a focus on leading the Soul Care ministry. While living in Mississippi she completed a two-year study with Millsaps Center of Ministry receiving a Certification as a Spiritual Director. April 2022, she became a Certified Leadership Coach. Sharon is a member of the International Network of Biblical Storytellers; she uses Biblical storytelling to tell the Good News of Jesus Christ. She has taught a Spiritual Direction class at North Park Seminary, Chicago, and online classes in spiritual direction for directees. She is mother to an enterprising daughter, granny to two amazing grands plus sister and auntie. Sharon is an accomplished artist working in various artistic materials. Fabric and doll making is her over the moon favorite. February 2024, she purchased a tiny trailer. She plans to wander, explore, and enjoy God’s creations.

Life Transition, Interfaith, Spiritual Practices, Retreats
I am a spiritual director in the Christian tradition. I grew up in the San Francisco Bay area and come to Alaska by way of sojourns in Oregon, Mississippi, and Colorado. I received my Spiritual Direction training at North Park Theological Seminary in Chicago and earned a graduate diploma in Christian Studies from Regent College in Vancouver, BC. I am also a certified city planner and recently retired from a secular career in community planning and development. Above all, Spiritual Direction is a ministry of holy listening. My role is to offer you an oasis in time, to come away from the busyness of your day-to-day life, to listen deeply to you – without judgment – and to help you notice and reflect on the presence and activity of God in your life. Long before my faith journey led me to Christ in college, I came to know the Creator in the natural world. I continue to relish outdoor activities – sea kayaking, Nordic skiing, and walking at a pace that fosters listening and reflection. I offer sessions in person at Community Covenant Church in Eagle River, Alaska, and see people living elsewhere in Alaska or the Lower 48 by Zoom. I also guide spiritual practices workshops and retreats.

As someone who has endured many transitions, including vocational changes from pastoring a church to chaplaincy in hospice and healthcare, and spiritual direction, I am grateful to be able to companion others on the journey, holding their sacred stories with gentleness and compassion as they seek to discover the ways in which God is present and active in their lives. In addition to being a spiritual director, I also serve as a hospital chaplain. I reside in Southern California with my wife of almost 30 years. Discernment in Transitions, Church Wounds, Grief Support, Mind & Body Integration and Awareness
My own experience of receiving Spiritual Direction has been life changing. I had no idea I was carrying so much grief! Living life includes disappointments, loss, unfulfilled dreams, as well as family vacations, promotions, and celebrations. But we often don’t take time to process the sadness or disappointments. Gradually our joy is diminished and God may feel distant as we keep “shoulding” ourselves. I love to listen and create space for people to be seen and heard; to sit with others in sadness or celebration; to witness God’s gentleness and compassion take someone by surprise. It is such a privilege to share in someone’s journey as they experience healing and the return of joy, or to see someone’s calling clarified and become front and center. I am a life-long learner and follower of Jesus. Most of my career has been in academic medicine as a pediatrician with a brief stint as an associate pastor. One of my interests is the intersection of how the body informs our understanding and integration of life experiences. I have an M.Div. from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, D. Min. from Gordon-Conwell, and my Spiritual Direction Certification is from the Fall Creek Abbey in Indianapolis.

I am a Taiwanese-American mother, artist, spiritual director, and beloved child of God. When I offer spiritual direction, it is about setting a table and providing safe space to come as we are with all of the “stuff” of life to notice and respond to Jesus. My prayer for my directees is that they too would experience the joy and freedom of “dwelling in the house of the Lord” together. I also serve as the Associate DIrector of Mosaic Network, a network of fiscally sponsored spiritual directors & ministers expanding access to spiritual formation care to underserved and marginalized communities.

Spiritual direction has been one of the greatest gifts in my life, in receiving it, and in offering it. It has been life-giving and life-changing. It helps us to connect to God in our everyday moments and in all of life, because we are the beloved of God and God cares about it all. Spiritual direction can be a healing and renewing place. It is also a place to bring one’s questions and doubts, anger and sadness, and when one doesn’t know what to do with God. It is all welcome. We are invited to come to this space just as we are. It is like coming home. I have had the blessing of being involved in spiritual direction ministry and in training others for many years. I count it a privilege and a joy.

Garland lives in Tulsa, Oklahoma, a member of Redeemer Church for over 23 years. Having grown up in a home where service, leadership and continued spiritual formation was emphasized, he carried these values into a lifetime of consistent ministry within the local body. This involvement has afforded the opportunity to develop deep and personal relationships with pastors and fellow congregants. Garland is a mechanical engineer by education and has recently retired from a career within the energy industry. His passion has always been learning; this combination of ministry in the local body and learning has led him down the path of spiritual formation and how that is accomplished in each one of us. Spiritual Direction is a working alliance with the goal of a deeper relationship and partnership with God. I bring this to individual spiritual direction and to my creation of contemplative spaces and Prayer rooms.

I am honored to listen to & affirm those seeking to explore and share their sacred stories. Companioning others as they look and listen for God’s work in their lives is one of the greatest joys in my life. My education and training as a marriage and family therapist shapes how I listen and ask questions, as we look together for God’s direction and encouragement in life. I find that Enneagram work often enters into the experience of direction, as people seek wholeness, freedom, and the abundant life God has for them. Play as Prayer, Spiritual Direction, Overcoming Anger
After thirty five years of offering pastoral counseling in my church community, I trained at the C. John Weborg Center for Spiritual Direction in 2006-2008. To be honest, making the transition from pastoral counseling to spiritual direction was quite challenging. Although both disciplines require listening, spiritual direction requires a deeper and different type of listening skill. I’ve often described the training as a deconstruction of the typical listening process. Spiritual direction is a prayer practice – discovering where in your life you find God present and where in your life you struggle to find it. The Christian life is a lifelong journey. Engaging in a spiritual direction relationship is about maintaining a rhythm of a monthly check-in with a director to hear about your on-going relationship with Christ in all of life. My own experience of meeting with a spiritual director has been one of discovering a deeper spiritual awareness of God being present. It has been exciting to see others experience the same in their relationship with God, too.

In my practice, spiritual direction begins with our original blessing and belovedness as those created in the image of God (Gen. 1:27). This “image” is the life of Christ within you, which can never be lost or taken from you. The spiritual journey or the journey of prayer, therefore, is not a self-improvement project aimed at getting us back in God’s good graces. Rather, it is a way of engaging in practices that awaken us to the presence and activity of God that is always happening within us. Please reach out if I can be helpful.

My interest in spiritual direction began in the 1980’s through the writings of Thomas Merton, Eugene Peterson, and Henri Nouwen. I have been meeting monthly with a spiritual director since 1990. When North Park Seminary opened its Center for Spiritual Direction in 2005, I was a member of Cohort 1. Since my retirement from pastoral ministry in 2010, my vocational focus has centered in offering spiritual direction and contemplative retreats. I enjoy reading, running, backpacking, and gardening.
